Opal is sapphire's opposite in almost every respect. Where sapphire is constant, opal shifts — its play-of-colour throws flashes of green, blue, pink and orange that change with the angle of the light. Where sapphire is hard, opal is soft, at 5.5–6.5 on the Mohs scale.

But there's a practical dimension worth weighing. If you want a piece you'll wear daily without thinking about it, sapphire is the more forgiving stone by a wide margin. If you want something with more character and don't mind a little care, opal rewards you. And if you're drawn to both, wear both — there's no tradition that forbids it, and blue against opal's colour play looks genuinely striking.

Opal needs real care. Clean with a soft, slightly damp cloth. If you own both a sapphire and an opal piece, don't store them together — sapphire will scratch opal.
