Why Scorpio has two birthstones
Star signs cut across calendar months rather than lining up with them. Scorpio runs from 23 October to 21 November, so it inherits the tail of October's opal and the bulk of November's citrine. A Scorpio born on 28 October belongs to opal; one born on 10 November belongs to citrine.
Because most birthstone charts are organised by month, this catches people out. If a chart told you citrine and a friend told you opal, you're both right — you were just born in different weeks.
Opal: the October Scorpio's stone
Opal is defined by play-of-colour — flashes of green, blue, pink and orange that shift as the stone moves. Black opal is the natural fit for Scorpio's reputation: its dark body tone makes every flash read sharper and more dramatic, all that colour against a near-black background. Citrine runs from pale lemon through to deep amber — a warm, sunlit stone that carries real presence without shouting. It's a variety of quartz, and at 7 on the Mohs scale it's considerably tougher than opal, which makes it a genuinely practical everyday stone.

Which should a Scorpio choose?
Birth date first: October means opal, November means citrine. That's the traditional answer.
Practically, citrine is by far the more hard-wearing of the two — at Mohs 7 it handles daily wear where opal, at 5.5–6.5, needs looking after. If you want a piece you never think about, citrine. If you want something with more drama and don't mind the care, black opal is hard to beat for a Scorpio.
Wearing both is entirely legitimate. Citrine's warm amber against opal's shifting colour is a genuinely good pairing.

Citrine is comparatively easy: warm soapy water and a soft cloth. It's worth keeping out of prolonged direct sunlight, but otherwise it asks little.
Opal is far more demanding. It holds water within its structure and is much softer, so: never an ultrasonic cleaner, never sudden temperature changes (which cause crazing), and always stored away from harder stones. Clean with a soft, slightly damp cloth. If you own both, keep them in separate compartments — citrine will scratch opal.
